Nighoj Potholes

I have been hearing about Nighoj potholes since so long, that there are naturally created potholes in the river. I have read it first time when i was in school.
Now a days, I just need a chance for driving my new car. I saw photos of Nighoj on one of my friend’s Facebook wall and planning started in my mind to go to Nighoj.

Google chachu with offline map is always ready to help us. We decided route as Pune- malthan- Nighoj – Ranjangaon -Pune.

This journey was started on Saturday from Pune by 8 am. The distance is near around 80 kms. We took halt at Ruchira snacks centre in Koregaon Bhima. They served awesome decent breakfast.

The break got over and we started towards Nighoj. We took Via Malthan road but it was in very very bad condition. Road  via Ranjangaon is very good, but we didn’t know about that. Anyways experience is the best teacher in our life.

We reached Takali haaji by 12.30 pm. The Kukadi river decides borders Pune and Ahmednagar districts. It has two villages on both sides, one is Nighoj in Ahmednagar district and Takali haaji in Pune. As we went from Pune side, we reached to Takali haaji but Nighoj is 3 km away from Riverbed.

At one particular point , near a temple , the river forms a deep canyon which has resulted in huge pothole like structures carved in the rockbeds because of the natural erosive action of the water and the rocks carried by the river.

There are two temples on the both sides of river. As per local people, these two goddesses are two sisters among their 7 sisiters. One is Kund mauli and other one was Nighoj chi Malganga mata.

Unfortunately the rain is not enough this year so that we were able to see potholes clearly. Ideally Summer is the best time to see these potholes as the water level goes down in the river. But i am sure that it will be equally impressive in early winter with many mini-waterfalls forming between the potholes.

After our photo-sessions, we had Sugarcane juice, as there are very few shops.

We started our return journey towards Pune via Ranjangaon with thoughts of this wonder.

I personally felt this place is really nice, but cleanness is needed. If developed well then it can be a more popular tourist place.
